About Our Island
About Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest Province in terms of both geography and population. It is approximately 224 kilometres in length and varies from 6 to 70 kilometres in width with a total land area of less than 6000 square kilometres. The Island’s small size makes it extremely useful for describing the size of forest fires occurring in other parts of Canada.
The soil is rich, red and fertile and supports a varied and prosperous agricultural industry. The island’s location in the Gulf of St. Lawrence serves to moderate the local climate and also to support a large commercial fishery specializing in lobster, blue mussels and the world famous Malpeque oyster. Beautiful beaches, family farms, fishing villages and a vibrant culture almost as rich as the soil itself make the Island a renowned tourist destination, drawing over one million visitors annually.
The population of Prince Edward Island is approximately 140,000 and these inhabitants share a close association and relationship to the land. There is a strong sense of place and community. PEI has an unmatched reputation for friendliness, quality of life and safety. The economic mainstays of the Province are of course agriculture, fishing and tourism but there is also burgeoning growth in aerospace, IT and bioscience. PEI is also striving to become Canada’s greenest province. It is already recognized for the development of wind generated energy and seeks to have all of its future electricity needs met by renewable energy sources.
